Tech Giants Issue Urgent H-1B Visa Travel Advisory Amidst New US Restrictions

In an unexpected and urgent development, leading technology companies such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have issued critical alerts to their employees holding H-1B visas. This comes as new US travel restrictions, coupled with a hefty re-entry fee, are set to be enforced imminently. The affected employees, particularly those currently outside the United States, have been advised to promptly arrange their return to the US to avoid significant financial and logistical challenges.

Urgent Advisory: H-1B Visa Holders Face Imminent US Travel Restrictions and Steep Fees

As of September 20, 2025, major tech corporations including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have disseminated urgent internal communications to their H-1B visa-holding personnel. These advisories stem from a newly enacted presidential proclamation imposing a travel restriction. Starting at 12:01 AM ET on Sunday, September 21, 2025 (9:01 PM PT on Saturday, September 20), any individual attempting to enter or re-enter the US on an H-1B visa will be subject to an additional fee of 0,000 per petition. This policy shift has led to a scramble among employees and their companies to navigate the implications.

Terrence O'Brien, reporting on this critical situation, highlighted that these companies have acknowledged the short notice of this policy change and have committed to providing further guidance as the situation unfolds. Specifically, Microsoft's internal memo details the new requirement, stating that entry will not be permitted without the substantial payment. Google's advisory echoes this, warning of potential significant delays or outright prevention of re-entry without the fee. Amazon’s directive urges employees with H-1B status and their H-4 dependents to return to the US before the deadline if currently abroad, and to remain in the country if already present, postponing any planned international travel. The tech giants are actively monitoring the situation and offering support to their affected workforce. Those unable to return by the deadline are advised to refrain from attempting entry until clearer instructions are provided.

This sudden and costly change to H-1B visa regulations presents a significant challenge for both the affected individuals and their employers. It underscores the unpredictable nature of immigration policies and the immense impact they can have on global talent mobility within the technology sector. Companies and employees must remain agile and informed to adapt to such rapid policy shifts, emphasizing the need for clearer, more stable immigration frameworks to support innovation and economic growth.
